Deep in the Throes of Oil Painting

I posted this on November 11, 2007 and put it in Ramblings

What a wonderful time the last couple of weeks have been. I’ve been deep in the study of my new cast painting I’m completing. It’s definitely been a new experience for me, I’ve always viewed oil painting as this wonderful, impossible gift, and while it’s certainly hard, I’m finally understanding some of the concepts involved.

I consider myself a natural draftsman, someone who is particularly skilled with the pencil, as my brain seemed to naturally fit pretty well around the concepts behind drawing. With painting, everything becomes a lot more complicated. Now I have to really be aware of color temperature, value relationships, paint application, thickness and thinness of the paint, texture, etc. It’s a weird and wonderful experience, but it is ridiculous amounts of fun as well.

I’m hoping within the next couple of days to have a progress shot online for everyone to see of the cast painting, as well as an assortment of various odd outdoor sketches we’ve been doing in paint. Some successful, some not, but who knows. I’m finding though, that I really enjoy doing plein air painting, it is refreshing and such a challenge trying to stay quick and honest with your subject while the light changes and your subject matter moves. But it is something I wish to pursue further, and hopefully I’ll have some beautiful paintings online for everyone to see shortly.
