I usually require at least two sittings for a portrait, the first to establish a good set of studies in order to accurately capture the personality and resemblance of the sitter(s). The second session, usually being the last before the painting is finished, is needed to flesh out any other details of the sitter that may have differed from the reference materials.
For the majority of my commissioned portrait work, I work from photographs that I shoot myself during the sitting sessions. This enables me to accurately and quickly finish an amazing portrait without the burden of multiple long sitting sessions for the customer.
Because of the nature of the portrait work that I do, unfortunately commercially shot or self-shot photographs usually lack the depth in the photographs due to the lighting and can restrict the accuracy and the look of the finished painting. For this reason, I usually will not work from this kind of material.
Near to the completion of the painting, I will send proofs or have the customer locally review the portrait to ensure that the likeness is accurate to the customers satisfaction. At this time as well, adjustments can be made to the portrait.
Delivery costs are the responsibility of the customer, therefore delivery arrangements are left up to the customer, whether by pickup or crating and shipping. Expect between one month to eight months, depending on the size and medium of the portrait, to receive a finished portrait after the initial sitting sessions.
